The Marisol umbrella combines female attributes with ancient instruments of power and virtue, such as the shield, scepter, and orb. Strong yet supple like a woman’s body, the steel frame and flexible, high-carbon steel ribs can brave fierce winds. The pagoda-shaped canopy recalls the womb, protecting and enshrining the sacred space within. Miranda Leigh sculpted the original handle to give women the feeling of taking their bodies and lives into their own hands. Cast in vivid Lucite colors that awaken the chakras, the vulva-shaped handle captures and reflects light, inviting us to honor the great gateway of life through which we all pass.

The first collection of prints are inspired by mandalas that were drawn by survivors of domestic violence from Nairobi, Kenya. In 2022, Joyaux Marisol will teach New York City survivors how to cut, sew, and assemble the Marisol umbrellas by hand using old-world techniques that Miranda learned from Gilbert Center, a master artisan. With proper care, the Marisol umbrella will remain a treasured heirloom for future generations.

Twenty percent of profits from the sale of each Marisol umbrella will be shared between the women from Nairobi and New York, creating an international circular economy that advances the following UN Sustainable Development Goals:
